Grandparent weekends are one of the great joys of small-child life. There is usually a biscuit tin, a garden to potter in and at least one adult who thinks a cardigan with fourteen tiny buttons is a lovely idea. The trouble starts at 7am on Saturday, when you realise the beautiful outfit you packed needs three adults, a shoehorn and a degree in engineering before breakfast.

This is not a guide to dressing children like miniature librarians. It is a guide to cute clothes that behave. The goal is simple: outfits that look charming on the doorstep, survive a trip to the park and come home with all their poppers intact. Here is the Cheeky Cherub edit for grandparent handovers, with eight outfit formulas, a mini overnight capsule and the high-street bits that earn their keep.

What makes an outfit grandparent-friendly?

Think less about trend and more about the handover. Can Nana get it on after a nap? Can Grandad work the bottom half without an instruction manual? The best pieces have easy poppers, stretchy waists, wide necklines and fabrics that forgive a bit of jam. Avoid fiddly buttons, tight tights, stiff denim and anything that needs ironing. A little stretch goes a long way. So does a clear label and a spare set in the bag.

The other rule is: keep it cheerful, not precious. A bright stripe, a friendly animal print or a soft rainbow knit can be practical and still look like a proper outfit. Save the cream heirloom cardigan for photographs, not spaghetti.

Eight cute outfits for a weekend at Nana's

  1. The popper dungarees outfit. Soft corduroy dungarees with poppers at the legs, a Breton striped long-sleeve top and pull-on leggings. Add a zip cardigan for the garden. Cute, comfy and no tiny buttons near a nappy change.

  2. The two-way zip babygrow. A zip sleepsuit with a two-way zip is a grandparent favourite. Choose one with a cheerful print and add a knitted cardigan for trips out. It looks like an outfit but behaves like pyjamas.

  3. The elasticated trouser set. Pull-on trousers with a soft elastic waist, a sweatshirt and velcro trainers. This is the school-run formula that also works for a cafe trip and a muddy puddle.

  4. The jersey dress and leggings. A simple jersey dress with no buttons, thick leggings and a cardigan. It is sweet enough for lunch and stretchy enough for crawling under the table.

  5. The matching jogger set. A supermarket jogger and jumper set in a bright colour. Add socks and a blanket. It is the easiest way to look put-together when nobody has slept.

  6. The pinafore with shoulder poppers. A soft pinafore with poppers at the shoulders, a long-sleeve top and leggings. It feels a bit special without needing tights or a bow.

  7. The fleece all-in-one. A zip-up fleece suit for outdoor pottering, with wellies and a hat. It keeps the nice outfit underneath clean and makes Nana look like a hero.

  8. The smart-enough lunch outfit. Soft trousers, a polo top with poppers and a cardigan. It is tidy enough for a Sunday lunch but still easy for the loo.

The mini overnight capsule

Pack by outfit, not by hope. For a weekend, take two vests, two sleepsuits, two pairs of leggings, two long-sleeve tops, one jumper or cardigan, one dress or dungarees, three pairs of socks, one coat or fleece, one blanket and one pair of shoes or booties. Add a spare everything for the bag. If the child is toilet training, add two extra bottoms and a wet bag. Label the bag with the child's name and any nappy or milk notes. It sounds boring, but it means Nana is not ringing you at bedtime to ask which cream goes where.

UK high-street and supermarket picks

The high street is full of good basics that do not cost a fortune. George at Asda jersey leggings and sweatshirts are brilliant for layering. Sainsbury's Tu does soft popper sleepsuits and simple dresses. Tesco F&F fleece all-in-ones are handy for the park. Primark ribbed sets are cheap and cheerful, while M&S cotton tops and John Lewis baby joggers are the sort of things that wash well. Next is good for dungarees and little knitwear. H&M has useful multipacks of vests and leggings. None of it needs to be precious.

Style notes: cheerful without being precious

The trick is to choose one cheerful thing and let the rest be easy. A bright knit over neutral leggings. A printed sleepsuit with a plain cardigan. A pair of rainbow socks peeking out of wellies. Avoid all-white outfits, trailing bows and anything dry-clean only. If an item cannot survive a biscuit, a nap and a trip to the park, it is not the right item for a grandparent weekend. Cute should be comfortable, and comfortable should still look cute.

The best grandparent handover outfit is the one that comes home in one piece, with a happy child and a slightly smug Nana. That is the real win.
